Challenges for October 2011

And I’m back. What better way to return than a post about what I’d like to accomplish this month? Some of it’s money, some of it’s fitness, all of it requires attention!

Yes, I call them Challenges rather than Goals because I’m a competitive sort of person with myself and think it’ll make me more likely to get stuff done. It’s October which means that my quarterly items from my 101 in 1,001 need to be done too.

  • Complete weeks 1-4 of Couch to 5K
  • Update resume
  • Go through closet and dresser for tossing/donation/sell back
  • Save 75% of swim pay and babysitting pay
  • List 2 items on Etsy
  • Track spending and establish budget for November
  • Start making lists for the holiday shopping season
  • Submit for reimbursement for LP trip
  • No shopping for me other than work related stuff for convention.
  • Send out packages to D, The Bro, and BatGirl
  • Write for 4 of my JoyJuice prompts
  • Pick Sewing Sunday with friends
  • Bring lunch 4 days a week and only 2 dinners out a week (one with Gia, one with Frank)
  • Pack up winter hats to send home
  • Make eye appointment

I think that’s good for now, I don’t want to get too ambitious. Ha.

What would you like to accomplish in October?

Challenges for this week (Feb 7-13, 2011) Recap

I’ve decided that it’ll be more “fun” to call my goals challenges. I can be a fairly competitive person (with myself) so I think this will help more. Also, you should know that my weeks go Monday to Sunday.

Goals Challenges for this week (Feb 7-13, 2011):

  • Take clothes I don’t want to Clothes Mentor or to donate. Nope.
  • Bring lunch 4 days this week. I brought lunch 3 days. One day I went out with Mom and Friday I had to get lunch.
  • Move money around and put 75% of swim pay in savings (25% in Cap Com and 50% in ING) Yes!
  • Get groceries as in ONLY what’s needed (Make a list and stick to it!) Do laundry with only cash on hand. I did. I added one thing to the list at the store though, razors, but I meant to put them on the list at home. Laundry didn’t get done.
  • Finish current Etsy project, list and promote. Post and promote The Lauren. No on the first one. Yes on the second one! But I called it the Daisy Next Door. And it’s so cute.
  • Test drive 2 cars. Nope. Worked through lunch and then opted to relax in the evening.

How did you do with your challenges for last week? (If you’ve posted about them, please feel free to put the link in the comment section!)

Challenges for January 2011 – Recap

Here were my challenges for the remainder of January:

  • Eat Dinner out (including take out)  no more than 2 times not counting #missionsushitour I actually didn’t eat out for dinner at all from Jan 10 on. Before that I had sushi one night and we ordered pizza in one night. Wow. I’m impressed with myself on that one!
  • Organize Tax documents – Yes and I’ve already started my taxes.
  • Make sure I’ve maxed out FSA for the year. Done!
  • Save 50% of Swim Pay Checks to ING accounts – YES! And a bit got tucked into my CapCom Savings too.
  • Improve savings goals by $500. I did, actually by $647.79

(Here’s where I stand now. Double click to see it bigger.)

Clothes Mentor – some thoughts

Yesterday, I was heading over to one of my favorite places to find a bargain, Ocean State Job Lot because I was looking for a few items and had high hopes they would have them.

I was meeting a friend and got there a bit early so I thought I’d wander around the plaza and kill some time. I found a Clothes Mentor and was poking around.

Do you know what Clothes Mentor is? It’s a shop that buys and sells women’s clothing. They’ll take your “high-end” items off your hands and give you cash for them on the spot. (I put “high-end” in quotes like that because while they had many brand names, they also had a considerable amount from Target and Walmart too. Good pieces? Possibly, but still, they’re not high-end.) They also purchase REAL designer bags and apparently the manager is certified to ID fakes.

I poked around a bit and saw some stuff I really liked but wasn’t in the mood to try on or find a home for in my closet (yet) so I didn’t get anything.

What I did do, though, was ask how it works.

You bring them clothes and accessories, they go through them and buy what they want if you agree to the amount and you take the rest home or can donate them to the City Mission. Sweet, I didn’t even have to take stuff with me!

(Some people do opt not to take what they offer and list items on eBay etc for better prices. I don’t have time for that.)

I happened to have that bag of clothes in my car looking for a drop off place and figured why not…while I knew that I wouldn’t see much for them, I was surprised that even though they were looking for spring and summer items – which were included in the bag, they didn’t want some of the skirts and dresses.  They ended up buying a few accessories that were in the bag and nothing else.

I may have misplayed my hand though. When I asked what they did with the clothes they didn’t want and they told me about the donation, I said, “Sweet. I don’t want to cart that stuff around with me.” I’m wondering if by saying that, did it   suggest to them that they could keep some of the items and resell them without paying me for them? (I’m not saying that’s what happened, I’m wondering if it’s  possible.)

But it’s not a mistake I’ll make again for sure. Also, I would be interested to see if some of the items end up on their shelves anyway.

Have you had any experiences with Clothes Mentor or their sister store for teens Plato’s Closet? Do you have any tips for me or other readers who might be considering taking clothes to them?

Challenges for this week (Jan 24-30, 2011)

I’ve decided that it’ll be more “fun” to call my goals challenges. I can be a fairly competitive person (with myself) so I think this will help more. Also, you should know that my weeks go Monday to Sunday.

  • Bring lunch at least 4 days this week.
  • Make hat and mail it.
  • List 3 more items on my Etsy shop and promote 3-5 times during the week.
  • Figure out how to link my PayPal to my ING account? Is this even possible?
  • Move money around for end of the month!

So that’s it for me. What are you working on or towards this week?

Challenges for this week (Jan 17-23, 2011) Recap

I’ve decided that it’ll be more “fun” to call my goals challenges. I can be a fairly competitive person (with myself) so I think this will help more. Also, you should know that my weeks go Monday to Sunday.

Goals Challenges for this week (Jan 17-23, 2011):

  • Bring lunch at least 3 days this week. DONE. Only one lunch out and it was a bday lunch with the girls.
  • Outside of obligations only pay cash. (I only have about $60 in cash handy so that’s limited and one of my tall orders for my day off is laundry.) UGH. Not so good. My car ended up in the shop and I had too much fun at Ocean State Job Lot picking up some things. Better next time.
  • List 3 more items on my Etsy shop and promote 3-5 times during the week. I managed to promote it and had my first ever official sale through it! YAY! I have stuff ready to list, but I have to finish the copy for it and it’s just not flowing right now. Pictures of my new listings are over here though.
  • Collect change in car, on dresser, in coat pockets and purses and reestablish change jar! Yes, but I didn’t count it yet. I wait til it’s full.
  • Get days off and book flight to see off The Bro when it’s time for him to go to Iraq. No. This trip wasn’t meant to be.

How did you do with your challenges for last week? (If you’ve posted about them, please feel free to put the link in the comment section!)
